The Girls Brigade
The 255th Northern Ireland Company of the Girls’ Brigade (Tandragee) was formed on the 25th September 25 1974, in the town’s Presbyterian Church, and celebrates 40 years in 2014.
Mrs Kathleen Weir was the first Company Captain and Mrs Doris Walker the first Leader-in-Charge of Explorer section. The late Rev Douglas Hamilton officiated as Chaplain. Some 28 girls and 11 officers and helpers were present.
Mrs Dorothy Harrison was the second Company Captain and gave 29 years’ service. Other dedicated Leaders-in-Charge of Explorer section during Dorothy’s term of Office included - Doris Walker, Iris Thompson, Georgie Huddleston, Gail Leckey and Margaret Topley. The Reverend Dr Robin Greer officiated as Company Chaplain for 14 years of Dorothy’s Captaincy.
Mrs Wendy Grant is current Company Captain, with Mrs Christine Pringle Leader-in-Charge of Explorer section. Mrs Jane Scott has just retired after 10 years service as Company Captain.
Highlights of company activities past and present include traditional camping trips under canvas, to England - Poole, Scarborough and Southport and trips to Birmingham’s Cadbury’s World, locations in Scotland and local venues such as Shannaghmore, Newcastle and Killowen.
The company has also trained many groups of girls through their Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
Fund raising activities over the years have included coffee mornings, car washes, fashion shows, suppers and three course meals - catered by Company ‘In-house ‘ chefs!
The Company has been and continues to be very involved in participating in various district competitions.
The girls continue to have lots of fun and fellowship every Tuesday and Thursday evening and grow and develop in all aspects of the programme - Spiritual, Physical, Educational and Service.
